Material integrity inspired by tradition
Cold Hawaii’s renovation was born out of collaboration with local residents. architect with Hahn Rafsen interior studio Vip. The guest house is located on 2.4 acres of land and stands like a small dot against the horizon. The 1,650-square-foot space is shaped by simple geometric forms and a limited material palette, exuding subtle confidence and durability. Aerated concrete, wood, stainless steel, glass and brick create a dialogue between modern minimalism and traditional vernacular architecture. Using just five materials, each with minimal modification, the architects aimed to create a raw and honest experience. Rough whitewashed walls, an untreated Douglas fir roof, and a natural wood ceiling treated with linseed oil all reflect the surrounding elements. Classic oak stable doors reflect the area’s agricultural history, and strategically placed glass walls connect the interior to the expansive landscape. The exposed brick floor, laid on sand instead of mortar, references the sandy beach and adds an unexpected textural contrast.
