Ireland’s Minister for Further Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD, announced additional funding for the Washington Ireland Program (WIP) while celebrating the program’s 30th anniversary in Washington DC this week.
Mr Harris, who is in Washington DC as part of a week-long trade mission, announced an additional €50,000 in funding for the prestigious programme.
Mr Harris said on Tuesday February 13: “I am delighted to be here today to celebrate the great work that the Washington Ireland Program has done since its founding in 1995.”
“Today I am announcing further funding for this program, which will provide young students from across Ireland with vast educational opportunities in a capital steeped in political history and importance. used to further a purpose.
“Over the past 30 years, this program has made a significant contribution to preparing future generations to play important roles in leadership and to building and maintaining a successful working relationship between Northern Ireland and Ireland.”
The Minister continued: “Following the reinstatement of the Northern Ireland Assembly and Executive last week, we are committed to the WIP for a Peaceful Northern Ireland and Ireland, driven through a network of North and South leaders who can work together to build relationships between diverse communities. Vision is more important than ever” and more relevant than ever. Building and fostering a positive environment for working across communities is an important part of a complex jigsaw puzzle.
“The additional funding recognizes the job and educational opportunities this program provides, and we hope it will benefit many of the Class of 2024.”

Following the announcement, Nicola Skelly, executive director of the Washington Ireland Program, said: “The Washington Ireland Program welcomes Minister Harris’ announcement of increased support for the Emerging Leaders Program as we celebrate our 30th anniversary.” Stated.

Minister Harris will continue her visit to Washington, D.C., stopping at both Georgetown University and Howard University, as well as a high-level meeting on Capitol Hill.
On Thursday, Harris will travel to Boston to meet with Joe Kennedy, the US special envoy to Northern Ireland, and work with the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), the Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC), and the Massachusetts Department of International Trade. be. and investments (MOITI). He also plans to visit Northeastern University.
Ms Harris’ visit comes just a week after the Tánaiste and Foreign Secretary Michael Martin visited Washington DC and Chicago.
