Waterford Braa named worst food in Ireland in controversial ranking

An online travel guide ranks Waterford’s Blaa bread as the worst food in Ireland, while the popular bread is also ranked as one of the worst in Europe.

TasteAtlas has compiled a list of the 13 worst rated foods in Ireland, with Waterford’s blaa emerging as the worst in the country.

“This traditional Irish bread roll is round or square in shape and comes in two versions, soft and chewy, both topped with flour and made with just flour, water, yeast and salt. “The tradition of making bulla goes back a long way, dating back to the 17th century when the Huguenots came to the city of Waterford,” Taste Atlas said in a recent ranking.

“Currently, only four bakeries produce this bread roll, which was granted Protected Geographical Indication status by the European Commission in 2013. Bulla is a standard breakfast staple, usually served plain. It can be eaten with or spread with butter, but it also makes a great breakfast. A midday snack traditionally served in the form of a sandwich with a variety of fillings.”

Taste Atlas ranked Blaa as the 95th worst-rated food in Europe, but Irish bread avoided being named in the guide’s ranking of the world’s worst foods.

Despite its low ranking, Buller is a very popular bread in Waterford and retains an important cultural status.

In 2013, BLAA bread was granted protected geographical indication status by the European Commission. This means that only BLAAs that are actually made in Waterford can be called his BLAAs.

Meanwhile, the incredibly popular breakfast roll has been named Ireland’s second worst rated food in a controversial ranking.

Breakfast rolls are widely popular, served in delis and gas stations across the country, and usually contain sausage, bacon, pudding, and a fried egg.

Elsewhere, spice bags, a staple of Chinese takeaways across the country, have been named the fourth worst food in Ireland.

A spice bag of salt and chilli chicken and chips with a healthy dose of onions and peppers is one of modern Ireland’s most popular dishes.

In third place was the Halloween-themed raisin-filled bread “Barm Black”, followed by soda bread, bacon, cabbage, and white pudding.

Coddle, a divisive dish commonly served in Dublin, was ranked the sixth worst food in Ireland.
