A weather warning has been issued for the island of Ireland as temperatures plummet to -4C in parts.
The Republic of Ireland’s Met Office has announced that it will be very cold from Sunday night into early Monday morning, with a risk of ice patches and freezing fog.
Met Eireann has issued a yellow cold and ice warning for all counties, warning the public that sleet and snow is possible in places.
The warning was to be in effect from 7pm Sunday to 11am Monday.
Dr. Alien advised that overnight minimum temperatures between Sunday and Monday will be between -3C and 1C, with the possibility of even colder temperatures in the central region.
Temperatures are expected to drop further on Monday and Tuesday nights, reaching as low as -4C in some parts.
A further yellow snow and ice warning will be in place for Donegal from 6pm on Monday until 11am on Tuesday.
Scattered winter showers could turn into more widespread sleet or snow with small accumulations possible.
In Northern Ireland, the PSNI urged motorists to use caution on the roads on Sunday morning as overnight temperatures fell below freezing, particularly in rural areas.
“Please reduce your speed and increase your stopping distance from the vehicle in front,” a spokesperson said.
This comes after the Met Office issued a snow and ice warning for Northern Ireland from 3am on Monday to 9am on Tuesday.
The authority said the heavy snowfall would cause disruption and warned the public that some roads and railways could be affected, leading to longer service times.
Forecasters said injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces such as dirt roads, paved roads and bike paths were likely.
Another level yellow snow warning is expected to be in effect for the northernmost parts of the region throughout the day Wednesday and Thursday.
