Queen Margrethe announced her abdication on December 31st in the traditional New Year’s Eve televised address. The 83-year-old monarch cited her advanced age and associated complications as the reason for her abdication. She stated in her speech, “I cede her throne to her son, Crown Prince Frederick.”

Princess Mary of Denmark: Formative years
Princess Mary of Denmark was an Australian citizen of Scottish descent before marrying into the royal family. She was born on January 5, 1972 in Hobart, Australia to Henrietta and John Donaldson. Her father was a Scottish immigrant and a professor of mathematics, and her mother was an assistant vice-chancellor at the University of Tasmania.
Mary Donaldson graduated from the University of Tasmania with a combined degree in Commerce and Law and had a career in advertising and communications before entering luxury real estate.
Prince Frederick and Princess Mary meet by chance in a pub
The future King and Queen of Denmark had a fun encounter at the Slip Inn pub in Australia. The Scandinavian prince visited Australia in 2000 for the Summer Olympics. Frederick was at the bar with other royal friends, including Princess Malta of Norway and King Felipe VI, then a prince and now King of Spain, to name a few. When Mary was introduced to the group, she didn’t know it was Royalty.
About her first meeting with Frederick, Mary told Australian comedian Andrew Delton in 2005: It wasn’t like there were fireworks going off in the sky or anything like that, but there was a sense of elation. ”
Mary moved to Denmark in 2002. The couple eventually became engaged and married in 2003 and 2004, respectively. The couple have four children: Prince Christian (18), Princess Isabella (16), and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine (12).
