Who is Denmark’s new King Frederick X? Introducing the “mischievous” Danish royal family who succeeded Queen Margrethe II on the throne

Must read

  • Frederic was labeled a “party prince” in the 1990s, but that image has completely changed.

The world is watching as the man once known as the “Prince of the Party” takes the helm of Europe’s oldest monarchy.

King Frederik X has vowed to be the modern monarch of “tomorrow”, succeeding his mother Queen Margrethe II, who ruled Denmark for 52 years.

A big fan of rock music, Frederic is also a passionate climate change activist, speaks four languages, and is the first Danish royal to complete a university education.

The father of four is widely believed to have transformed his public image from a rebel and party-loving young man to a family man and future king.

But Frederick, who has been married to Australian-born Queen Mary for 19 years, has been in turmoil in recent months as he has faced rumors of an affair.

On Sunday, he showed solidarity with his “beloved” wife Mary as they appeared together on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace as Denmark’s new king and queen.

Married for 19 years and proud parents of four children (pictured together), the famously down-to-earth royals are loved by millions.

Denmark’s then-Princess Margrethe and Prince Henrik show off newborn Prince Joachim as his older brother Crown Prince Frederik looks on at Fredensborg Castle in Denmark in 1969.

Queen Margrethe II, 83, announced her retirement in her annual New Year’s Eve speech, shocking the nation and many royal watchers around the world.

As the eldest son of Denmark’s Prince Margrethe and Prince Henrik, who died in 2018, Frederick has always been first in line to the throne and is one year older than his brother Joachim.

As heir, Frederick inherited the role of monarch from his mother and is said to have spent “a lot of time” in recent years preparing to take on more royal duties.

But royal correspondent Marie Rondet said the new king was not necessarily “ready” to become king.

“He himself said that when he turned 18, he was totally unprepared for what was going to befall him at that point,” she told Sky News.

A lonely and tormented teenager, Frederick resents his parents for neglecting him as he fulfills his royal duties.

Danish royal commentator Gitte Redder previously said: “As a child and young man, he was very uncomfortable with the media attention and his knowledge that he was going to be king.”

Frédéric sought solace in fast cars and a simple life, and was considered a spoiled party prince in the early 1990s.

Frederick graduated from Aarhus University in 1995, where he studied Political Science

He was given the nickname “Prince Casanova” due to his string of attractive girlfriends, including lingerie model Katja Stokholm.

But after graduating from Aarhus University with a degree in political science in 1995, that perspective began to change.

During his college years, he enrolled at Harvard University in the United States under the pseudonym Frederik Henriksen.

The fake surname was given to him after his father, Henri de Montpezat, a French diplomat who became Prince Henrik at the time of his marriage to Margrethe.

But Frederick really began to grow into the role while training with three branches of the Danish military.

His military service began in 1986 with the Queen’s Life Guard Regiment.

He served in the Navy’s Frogmen Corps, where he was nicknamed “Pingo” (Penguin) and was one of only four recruits out of 300 to pass all exams in 1995.

In 2000, he took part in a four-month, 3,500-kilometer (2,175-mile) skiing expedition across Greenland.

Prince Frederick at the time participated in military training as a volunteer for the Danish Navy’s elite frogman unit (1995).

The future king was later appointed commander of the navy and colonel of the army and air force.

His reckless side led him to accidents on his sled and scooter that landed him in the hospital.

Meanwhile, his popularity has skyrocketed thanks to his annual “Royal Run” fun run across Denmark, which he started in 2018.

“He’s a sportsman and goes to concerts and football games, so he’s even more approachable than his mother,” royal expert Redder said.

“I don’t want to confine myself to a fortress. I want to be myself, a human being,” he once said, and insisted he would continue to do so even after assuming the throne.

He met his wife Mary Donaldson, a 28-year-old Australian lawyer, in a Sydney bar. slip in 23 years ago.

After meeting in a pub, Fred, then 32, who was in Australia to cheer on the Danish sailing team at the 2000 Olympics, asked Mary for her phone number and romance blossomed.

Frederick and Mary will make their first public appearance at the Tasmanian Yacht Club on 19 January 2003 ahead of the Dragon Boat World Championships.

“When we first met, we shook hands. I didn’t know he was the Prince of Denmark.

“Thirty minutes later, someone came up to me and said, ‘Do you know who these people are?'” Mary said in an interview about her meeting with the heir to the Danish throne.

The pair dated long distance for a year, with Frederic secretly traveling Down Under until Mary moved to Denmark in 2001 to study Danish at Studies Kolen in Copenhagen.

In early 2003, Frederick’s mother, Queen Margrethe, publicly confirmed their relationship, and the two announced their engagement later that year on 8 October at Amalienborg Castle.

The two have been married for 19 years, and their relationship is often referred to as a “real-life fairy tale.”

Frederick and Mary were married in Copenhagen Cathedral on May 14, 2004, and the Crown Princess chose a beautiful dress by Danish designer Uffer Frank and a veil first worn by Crown Princess Margaret of Sweden in 1905. is.

The couple have four children, including their eldest son Christian, who will take over his father’s role as crown prince.

They try to give their four children as normal an education as possible, sending them primarily to state schools.

Their eldest son, Prince Christian, who recently turned 18, became the first Danish royal to attend nursery school.

Historian Sebastian Olden-Jorgensen said that in recent years, as the Queen entered her 80s, the couple gradually took on more royal duties, but “very slowly and depending on her health.” Ta.

He added that the royal family is “modern, woke and loves pop music, contemporary art and sport.”

In October, photos surfaced of Denmark’s Crown Prince Frederik and Genoveva Casanova on a night out in Madrid without his wife, Crown Princess Mary.Photos taken throughout the day showed the pair strolling around El Retiro Park.

He said they represent “less revolutionary potential than the Queen,” but a careful transition adapted to the times.

In recent months, Frederic has been the subject of scandalous headlines and rumors alleging an “infidelity.”

During October. Photos of Frederic enjoying a night out in Madrid with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova have been leaked.

Since the photo was released, sources have maintained that the two are good friends who “see each other several times a year.”

The royal family has remained tight-lipped about the photo, but Frederick and Mary have appeared united in public, sharing a kiss on the balcony after being proclaimed king.

Full text of King Frederick’s speech

My mother, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II, ruled Denmark for 52 years. For half a century, she has followed the times using our common heritage as a starting point.

She will forever be remembered as an extraordinary monarch. Like most people, my mother also managed to become one with her own kingdom. Today, the throne is inherited.

My wish is to become the unified king of tomorrow. It’s the job I’ve been waiting for my whole life. This is a responsibility that I take on with great respect and pride, and with great pleasure.

This is my job of painstakingly carrying out and persevering in the position entrusted to me.

We need all the support we can get. From my beloved wife, from my family, from you, and from something greater than ourselves. I face the future knowing that I am not alone.

United and dedicated to the Kingdom of Denmark.
