More than 100 applicants from industry, start-ups and research centers applied to receive Danish funding to promote plant-based protein production in the country.
In 2021, the Danish government approved a climate change agreement that includes the European Union’s largest investment in plant-based research and development, aiming to reduce emissions from the country’s food system.
According to the European Association for Plant-Based Foods (EAPF), a group of organizations working on plant-based value chains, livestock farmers in the European Union receive 1,200 times more public funding than the plant-based food sector.
The Scandinavian country has set aside a total of $195 million by 2030 for what is now colloquially called “Plantevonden.” A portion of this grant will be allocated to farmers and businesses with innovative ideas, plus $11.7 million annually in funding to support the global transition. plant-based foods.
The newly established Plant Foundation will hold its first call for applications by the end of August this year, with projects competing to win an initial $195 million in grants.
Marie-Louise Boysen-Rendal, president of the Foundation, said the Foundation had received 101 applicants and said: “We are pleased with the tremendous interest in the Plant Foundation and, along with the rest of the Board, we would like to thank all I look forward to reading through the entries.” The ministry conducted an initial review and found that “only” 97 cases were eligible for the fund.
This first round would have distributed $8.35 million, but according to the Department of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, the total amount requested to satisfy the 101 applicants is equivalent to $29.4 million, so everyone should be eligible for that share. The Plant Foundation board is currently undertaking the long task of reading through 100 applications and selecting the best ideas.
