We are being broadcast live on national television while cameras are filming us. We climb the stairs and wait outside the Velvet Room. Soon the door opens and the Danish royal family appears. Queen Margrethe sits on a glittering golden throne with jewels, a tiara and a red dress. It feels unreal. When my turn came around, she bowed and said, “Hello, Your Majesty,” and she nodded and smiled. I then shook hands with Crown Prince Frederick and noticed that he was wearing elegant white gloves. Next, I would like to say hello to Prince Christian and wish him a happy birthday. It all takes a few seconds.
After meeting with the royal family, I head to the Riddersalen (Great Hall) for dinner. Prince Christian stands up to make a speech. He explains how, despite being a prince, he is nervous and found starting a new school difficult. We are all touched as his mother, Crown Princess Mary, comes from the table and congratulates him with a hug.
I’m sitting at table 21 in the center of the room, with a good view of Prince Christian and Queen Margrethe’s table. They are smiling and laughing with Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway. Dinner is a fish dish served on a silver platter and a cake that looks like a pumpkin to go with it. I begin to feel nervous and question my Cinderella plans. I definitely want to avoid angering the royal family.
