The alert will be in effect from 8pm today until midnight Thursday.

A yellow rain warning has also been issued across the country for St Stephen’s Day, which will remain in place until midnight on Thursday.

Heavy rain is expected to fall overnight and into Wednesday, which could lead to localized flooding.

A separate status orange wind warning has also been issued for Galway, which will be in force from 6pm on Wednesday until 6am on Thursday.

In addition to spring tides, westerly winds will be very strong, which may cause coastal flooding.

Meanwhile, a status yellow wind warning for Clare, Kerry, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo will come into force at midnight on Thursday and remain in place until 4pm.

St. Stephen’s Day will be an overall cold day with early sunshine in many counties before the worst of the rain arrives.

The sun will gradually become hazy and rain will fall in Münster in the afternoon, with rain and windy weather gradually spreading to the rest of the country in the evening.

Eireann said some surface flooding was likely in Cork and Kerry, but localized flooding was possible across the country.

Temperatures range from 4 to 8 degrees Celsius, with a later rain and cooling breeze.

Tonight it will be rainy, windy and rainy. Rain may turn to sleet in the mountains of northern Ulster.

Temperatures will drop to between 1 and 4 degrees by midnight, but will quickly rise to between 7 and 10 degrees by dawn on Wednesday.

Strong to strong winds and surface water flooding are possible Wednesday morning.

Tomorrow we will see another round of strong winds and early rain across the country.

Winds will be strong in the afternoon, especially in the south and west.

Temperatures will be between 7 and 10 degrees, with strong winds.

Wednesday night will be cold, windy, and partly sunny with a chance of showers. In the northern hills, some rain showers could bring winter chill.

Temperatures will drop to between 4 and 7 degrees Celsius, and winds will pick up.

Thursday will be windy with bright sunshine, widespread showers and frequent hail and thunder in the west. Some waterfalls may change in winter in the mountains.

Temperatures will be between 7 and 10 degrees Celsius, with strong winds.

Thursday night will be mostly sunny with a chance of showers and some hail and sleet in the hills.

Temperatures will drop to 1-4 degrees Celsius, moderate to breezy winds, and a chance of frost and ice.

This week will “continue to be colder and more unstable than in recent days,” Met Eireann said.
